The one on the left is Fernanda (thank you, Lubna) and the one on the right is Z. Z isn’t short for anything. It’s just Z.

I named this woman Amalie after a friend’s daughter. I imagine the original Amalie will grow up to be this. As for Agnes, that was a friend’s suggestion for the subject of this portrait. But I’d already chosen Amalie, so I decided to introduce another subject. Woof woof!

Listen as you watch: When I started this picture earlier this evening, I was stuck. I knew I wanted to put something on this woman’s head, I just wasn’t sure what. A little ways in I posted my progress on Instagram. Minutes later, my friend Lubna Saif Abbas left a comment: I imagine her with a set of […]

My mom wanted to give her orthopedist a gift and asked if I’d create something for her. So this is the drawing I made.

I am feeling inconsolably sad. My moods are unmanageable, and I feel like I’m never going to get out of this depression. It’s so difficult when the ones closest to you, anyone of whom can possibly alleviate this pain, are thousands of miles away. Even my ‘art’ seems to elude me. I feel hopeless, useless […]

I’ve been meaning to photograph these two small canvases which hang at a friend of mine’s place for ages now. I finally did yesterday. These two drawings were created at a very difficult time when I felt that the only power I had left in this world was to draw a picture. I was very […]

This is a lady who was on my wall for over a year. A few days ago she just couldn’t stay on my wall any longer so she took a leap. A few days before that, Jana came over to take some photos and said, ‘Hey, she looks like Reham.’ I agreed. And then she […]
Cultural Re-Expressions Revisited|The Miniatures

A week ago, I got a call from Dr. Tim Sullivan. He said he liked my paintings from the 2004 Cultural Re-Expressions exhibition, but that his walls in Utah weren’t big enough for the large-scale works. So he commissioned me to make smaller ones. Tiny ones, to be exact. Tiny for my big, fat fingers. […]
