I started a new series titled Paintings About Sitting today. I really, really enjoyed doing these, from dying the coffee filters with food coloring to cutting and deco-patching the pieces onto the canvas and finally adding in my sitting ladies. Fun, fun, fun!

I really struggled with this one. I thought it was finished but I knew deep inside it was a very weak painting. But sometimes I’m lazy and will pretend it’s finished just so that I can literally sleep at night. I even hung it up on my wall in a last ditch effort at verisimilitude. […]

Sometimes I take an old practice painting from when I was giving lessons and put it in some kind of context.

I’m surprised I didn’t eat the still life. I came this close to it.

This is a commissioned work I started two days ago and finished this morning. Weeks ago, the request was simple: to paint a picture influenced by Sadu weaving. As simple as my goal was, I found myself floundering under the weight of the original painting I started for the job. It just wasn’t working out for […]

This is a painting I started weeks and weeks ago. It was originally intended to be a painting someone had commissioned me for. But she just didn’t want to be. And now I think I know why.

This painting is a little jarring on the eyes, but sometimes I feel I have to step out of my comfort zone a little. I felt that the lines emanating from behind her, although at first a playful way to cover my canvas, became very necessary as they complemented her unsettling gaze. To quote just […]

I decided for my March exhibition at Gallery Tilal to continue my Stories of Eves series. I just feel like I haven’t explored the subject to my fullest capacity (in other words, I’m still not bored with it). And in light of some personal current events, there is still so much I want to say […]

Well, the painting is done. I’m happy with it as my first oil painting in decades. I’m not going to bother too much about resemblance or even technique. I’m just going to tell myself what I tell everyone I ‘teach’: You will only get better with every painting you do. Oils. Wow. Me.

Yesterday I watched a documentary about portrait painter Alice Neel, beautifully filmed by her grandson Andrew Neel. The moment I looked at the DVD cover, lent to me by my sister-in-law Jana, I felt a connection with her work: as if I’d done it, or I could do it, or I do it in my […]

Please remember that Fairuz is on display at the Boushahri Gallery for a week. The gallery is located in Salmiya, Baghdad Street, Building 36. Park your car in the back, there’s usually lots of space. If you’re walking, you can go straight through the side door (by the camera store). Morning hours are 10am-1pm, evening hours […]
