the well-dressed, well-coifed bulgarian lady who occasionally cheated

Listen as you watch:

When I started this picture earlier this evening, I was stuck. I knew I wanted to put something on this woman’s head, I just wasn’t sure what. A little ways in I posted my progress on Instagram. Minutes later, my friend Lubna Saif Abbas left a comment: I imagine her with a set of playing cards. I thought that was perfect! Because it allowed a narrative where this woman would have, on her head (well, in her hair) a playing card. So thank you, Lubna, for unsticking me!

the book of curtains } me and rui

i dream of rui

i dream of rui

It’s so rare that I’m inspired by contemporary art these days. And when I say ‘inspired’ I mean loving a body of work so much that I’m compelled to emulate it. I’ve been following Rui Tsunoda on Twitter and fell in love with his drawings. For the past two days I’ve been fiddling around with my pencils, markers, watercolors and inks in attempt after attempt to satisfactorily create a piece as dynamic as his. I finally settled on my Book of Curtains and Abraxas inks to fully embrace Rui. I became so frustrated, however; knew that all I had to do was keep going, that it would eventually come together. It finally did when I accidentally spilled my ‘rosa rosen’ ink on my desk (and phone). There was a second of horrific disbelief followed by a wait-a-second-why-not moment. I turned my book over the spill and allowed the paper to absorb the pink ink. And it was complete.

video illustration } take two

Ok, here it is all fixed and 33 seconds in. I’ve moved it from PowerPoint to iMovie, which makes a ton more sense. Please keep in mind that I am using this song without permission, and that it is something I’m working on now.

stories of eves } fatima & eve } part two

This is part two of Eve’s adventures with my friend (and her friend now) Fatima Fayez. When Fatima sent me these, she included her own narrative. I loved reading Eve’s days unfold via Fatima’s Whatsapp messages! So I’m going to post them here along with the photos she took. Read More

new video illustration

You know it’s rewarding when you spend six hours doing it and the result is six seconds long. I haven’t done a ‘video’ for ages and as I was driving the other morning, listening to Elbow’s Mirrorball, I started visualizing the song. Of course I have no idea where this will go but I think that so far it’s really cool. I’m very happy with it.
