How’s this for a coincidence. The number 76 is a milestone for me as it was the first time I noticed what year it was (I was six at the time. Is that too old to learn about dates?). I became so conscious of it because I saw it everywhere, this magical number 76. The one that made me finally ask my mom about its significance was my brother’s blue and green socks with 76 on the sides. Anyway, how is this a coincidence? Because I’ve been listening to Gary Numan all morning (and over the past couple of days). And Gary Numan is a milestone in my love for music. He was the first singer I ever fell in love with. Way before David Bowie. I was nine years old. Ok, there have been greater coincidences in history, but…here’s Gary Numan:

rusty notebook } afraid?

what are you feeling today?

what are you feeling today?

I drew this last night. I am overwhelmed. I have so many things coming up in March, I honestly don’t know how it happened. I’m getting worse and worse at visualizing my days beyond ‘tomorrow’. Even that feels abstract to me. I can only visualize ‘now’. Am I rapidly losing my braincells? Maybe, I don’t know. Anyway, I drew this last night. As you can see I had a little fun with white-out. I found the white quite effective so went over a  couple of my previous drawings in this notebook. And I also ripped the cover off. It was hideous and made no aesthetic sense. Read More

a nightly session of MOSOT (modular origami stellated octahedron therapy)

i just made this and now i’m happy

I was having a bit of a blah day, what with certain physical discomforts, a sudden sandstorm and a general feeling of ennui. Until I had a brain pop. Out of the blue I thought about origami and how therapeutic it is if done satisfactorily. And after much web-surfing for clear instructions, a few moments of utter frustration and ultimately deciding to figure it out myself, I made this colorful polyhedron. Look, Mom! I can fold! sara kalandar. we both saw the resemblance immediately. sara is my late aunty latifa’s younger daughter

The Alkandari clan loves being snapped, so we’re always looking for the next great photo op. So last Thursday I took my watercolor sketchbook to our weekly family lunch. I wanted to match my girls with various relatives, whether by looks or color combos or just a certain je ne sais quoi. I wanted them to be involved in the choice, and I must say they all seemed to pick the right girl for them. Read More

On a freezing morning in January, Roxie and I took my fourth Traveling Tap out for a walk around my brother’s new home in Leatherhead, Surrey. As always, I put her through the wringer. And as always, she obliged. Click here for more of her adventures. Read More

What more appropriate song for a fun (and bittersweet) day with Dave than Soft Cell’s Say Hello Wave Goodbye?

I couldn’t be happier when my high school friend David Dobson said he’d be stopping over on his way back from Jaipur to the US. David never fails to make me laugh. And of course what little time we had, at least 60% of it was spent being actively creative. So really, what more can a girl ask for? This time our fun photo shoot took place closer to home, earlier than the birds rise and with my brother Mo and his two amazing dogs Iber and Teton. Oh yes, and the two trucks. Check David’s work here and his last trip to Kuwait here.
