I’ve been wanting to take one of Lubna Saif Abbas’ workshops for ages, but they always fell on days that I couldn’t attend. This one, however, was on a Sunday afternoon. Perfect. And what made it even more perfect was that I love playing with clay and I love silver and it sort of blended many of my interests into one 4-hour-long workshop given by architect-turned-metal-clay-guru Hawra Bahman. I’ve been wanting to get back into life drawing for a while now, and I’m so out of practice. So I decided that the best model for this would be my new nephew Khaldoun. Little did I know what a difficult subject he would be. No matter how much I enjoy looking at him, the little monkey won’t stay still! And neither will his mom. But that’s what life drawing is about, capturing the essence of the subject in the least time you have. I’m also discouraged by how rusty I am. It was very hard for me not to draw the lines that I have become so familiar with in my paintings and sketches. But I think Khaldoun’s Book will be a good exercise for me. how lucky we are to have this delightful oasis in the midst of salmiya’s hustle and bustle. situated on a quiet street overlooking the arabian gulf, zeri crafts could not have been situated in a more apt location.
Christmas time is upon us, it’s snowing on prettygreenbullet and I’m in the mood for a bit of shopping. As much as I’ve always appreciated hand-crafted items, my last trip to London, specifically the Contemporary Crafts & Design Fair in Chelsea, intensified my desire for all things handmade with passion and love. So in the spirit of Christmas shopping-and with the help of Eve-I’m going to dedicate a few posts over the coming weeks to my very gifted friends.
I’ve been an avid fan of Laila Alhamad’s Zeri Crafts since its foundation in 2010. I remember her telling me about it over brunch at PQ (where else!), and witnessing a systematic demise of our indigenous culture, it was so refreshing to hear her speak about contemporizing the age-old craft of Sadu-weaving. Last week the Eves and I visited her Open House event and it was as lovely and inspiring as ever. girls, don’t get stuck
Christmas time is upon us, it’s snowing on prettygreenbullet and I’m in the mood for a bit of shopping. As much as I’ve always appreciated hand-crafted items, my last trip to London, specifically the Contemporary Crafts & Design Fair in Chelsea, intensified my desire for all things handmade with passion and love. So in the spirit of Christmas shopping-and with the help of Eve-I’m going to dedicate a few posts over the coming weeks to my very gifted friends.
I’ve known Caitley Symons (she’ll always be Cathy to me) of Caitley Symons Textile & Design since 1986, back when we were both sophomores in Mrs. Seaton’s Graphic Design class at Cairo American College. We hit it off over our love for Duran Duran and hanging out at the Khan Al-Khalili bazaar. A typical weekend together would be visiting the old souq on a Friday: pushing against the tide of post-Friday prayer believers, haggling with shopkeepers over silver jewelry, buying yet another pair of leather sandals, imagining we saw Sting in a sheesha cafe, and taking pictures. Always taking pictures. And I can’t help seeing this history in Cathy’s printed fabrics.

A couple of weeks ago, a friend and I visited the Egon Schiele Radical Nude exhibition at the Courtauld Gallery. One of the ways you can tell I really love a collection is if it makes me want to go home and draw or paint. And this one did. Of course I wouldn’t even dream about my work coming close to Schiele’s, but it is my work, inspired by him. And perhaps one day I will inspire others to want to go home and draw or paint. friday, november 7 } what a bonus to have seen one of my close friends nazira twice! although we met quite recently (end of 2012) we quickly developed a deep friendship. we live thousands of miles apart, but she’s one of the few who significantly helped me through the slow deterioration and ultimate demise of my relationship with *him*
I am finding being in the UK rather difficult this time. I don’t know if it’s my long stay (two weeks) when I’m missing my kids already, Naz leaving tonight or the loneliness I’m feeling without *him*. It’s not like I hadn’t been here before without him in my life, but somehow it’s sadder this time round. And it’s not like I care as much as I used to. I don’t think it’s about him specifically; it’s about not having someone special to share these moments with.
