My poor packages. I love and savor them so much that their unwrapping often resembles a titillating striptease at a gentleman’s club; a slow denuding involving photography, discreet or not.

a journal with a new, not-completely-found purpose

So I’ve repurposed my original new journal. To me right now, it feels like a book which delves a little deeper into my subconscious than my more conventional journals. And because of the unfavorable way the pages reacted with my inks, it’s forced me to be more experimental and try new techniques. And that’s almost always a good thing.

My alphabet recital stopped at ‘p’ eons ago. I have to admit I wasn’t that into it. I didn’t think it was clever enough, or maybe I was trying to be too clever. So I sort of forgot about it. I decided to look at my previous illustrations and thought: you know what? This isn’t so bad. And that propelled me to revisit this notebook and proceed with my recital.

I’m including a gallery of my prior ABCs here. Read More

Ok, I need to explain something. This is my new new journal. The book itself is actually one of four I ordered originally from Hope House Press. I kept one-which would become ‘The Brand New and Improved Testament’-and gifted three, each to a special friend, whom I will refer to as M, S and T. And it should have ended there.

A few weeks ago, I ordered a new journal from HHP and was delighted to receive it a lot sooner than expected. It looked spectacular, it smelled spectacular and it was spectacular. Until I put pen to paper. The Abraxas inks I use, and which I have recently ordered six new bottles of, were not meshing well with this new paper. It felt detrimental to me because I became addicted to the rush of that particular ink on that particular paper. It was like two amazing people who should have never gotten married. So I had an idea and it involved three options: ask M for her book back, ask S for his book back, ask T for his book back.

I knew for sure that neither M nor S had started writing in their journals, but that wasn’t my main concern. I had a problem with the rudeness of what I was about to propose to two-if not three-of my favorite people. And to be honest, it was M’s book that I coveted the most because it was the same size as my previous journal. So I called S with my suggestion (because he is my moral-ethical-and-anything-related-to-etiquette compass) and he said to just go for it. So I did. And M. She was so gracious to accept my proposal of replacing her journal with a new one I placed an order for this morning.

M is Mai, and I’m calling this new journal ‘Months of Mai’. Thank you, Mai. Not for saving my life, but for saving the quality of it.

So I finally started writing in my new journal from the wonderful Hope House Press. I noticed that my ink was being absorbed in a different way, seeping through to the other side. To me, that was a problem. But every problem that presents itself comes with at least one creative solution. So I decided that I’m going to roll with the bleed and incorporate it into my next entry. Each page is a day behind a curtain, where the past touches the present. It makes sense, right? Read More

Sometimes I swear I’m just lucky. I sat down this morning to plan for my upcoming workshop at the Project Space in Doha. I looked for a color pencil set (there’s always one somewhere in this house) and found this one with wonderful earthy shades. I’ve always wanted a limited palette because I do tend to go nuts with color. The thing that attracted me most about this set was the fact it included a pencil sharpener which I was in dire need of. I opened the set and the sharpener wasn’t there. I guess I may have bought it one day for the sharpener (that’s one thing always lacking in this house). Anyway, I used the colors and they were spectacular. Not because of the actual colors but because they inspired me to do these three drawings this morning. I really felt in my element. Read More
