I’m loving the effects I’m getting with the Instaframe and PhotoToaster apps. So my Instagram feed has been bombarded with these antiqued menages a trois/quatre/cinq/six. Read More

What a messy day this was. I got to Dubai International Airport with ample time to check-in, have my breakfast and enjoy the requisite Duty Free experience. I soon discovered that instead of booking for that day, I’d booked for the 30th. Needless to say I wanted to kick myself in the bum and then cry. I never made it onto that early flight but managed to get a booking seven hours away (I had to pay more than I paid for my previous ticket, a fact I just bit and swallowed). I wanted to die. Luckily my sister was still at the hotel, so I took the train back (the train which made a humming sound, ending with a little whimper), had breakfast with my sister and spent the rest of the day at a mall.

Every now and then you meet a little man you fall in love with. And then you make him a chair. Here’s to heirlooms and happy times, Hilal.
art dubai 2013

saad qureshi’s ‘borrowed from the shadows’, or as i affectionately called it ‘kufeya intestines’. i think this is the first work that stirred my insides. how difficult it was for me not to wrap myself up in these stuffed fabric coils. visceral and beautiful. chomp!
After years of ‘You’re not going to Art Dubai?’ or ‘You must go to Art Dubai’, I decided to go to Art Dubai. I was always skeptical about it, accused it of being too commercial, that art should not be displayed in such an exhibitionist manner, that it should be more intimate, ideally displayed in a gallery/museum or exhibited in public with a decent space in which to view and appreciate it. And as an artist-and ultimately a human being-I thought it would be a total ego crusher. ‘Why can’t my work be here?’ ‘What’s wrong with me?’. I can safely say that I was right about both. Art Dubai is not for the artist. At least not one of the faint-hearted variety. I suppose it is ostensibly a place to go to view deserving artwork. But I feel it is mostly aimed at the prospective gallerist/collector. And the schmoozers. Having said that, I did manage to brush myself off and enjoy both schmoozing (Collector’s Circle anyone? Thank you, Farida Sultan for my VIP pass!) and a mild form of networking. And most importantly, there were many inspiring works.
I have to be fair and say that Art Dubai was quite impressive. It’s just that next time I’ll go not as an artist, but a lover of the arts. And I’ll take a friend.

This is one of two chairs I’m preparing for dar.nur. I missed making my chairs (I don’t make the actual chairs, just the drawings). I’m working on the sister chair but that’s proving a little more difficult. More later.

I’m finally posting my brother Mohammed’s photos of the opening night of my exhibition Kiss & Cut. Unfortunately, he was having trouble with his camera and wasn’t too happy with what he took. But to me it’s not about the final photos. It’s a personal appreciation of his being there and capturing the moments that only he could see. Thanks, Moh! Always.

These are some photos I took last night. Apart from my feet being torn apart by killer heels, I think the night went well. It’s always good to interact with people who have just met your work. Traditionally, I post my brother Mohammed’s photos, but unfortunately his camera failed him yesterday. He did take some shots but will take some more soon, fingers crossed. Meanwhile, here’s a somewhat perfunctory glimpse of the exhibition.
The exhibition runs from March 3-March 14. The gallery is closed on weekends.

the way i pictured the exhibition, i figured i needed another scroll. not OCD. just attention to detail
So I finally had my panic dream this morning. I dreamt that my show was tonight and I hadn’t even brought my works to the gallery, which had changed without anyone telling me. My show was in an hour and I hadn’t even selected my outfit. And I didn’t have a car and everyone who was there to help was getting really upset with me. And the venue was tiny. And oh it was awful. Posted on February 10, 2013 Leave a Comment

with this one it’s nice to pretend that i’m on a pirate ship (the romantic hollywood kind, not the somali-boat-with-armed-criminals-on board kind) navigating the seas looking for treasures to loot. at other times i like to pretend i’m a scientist about to make a huge discovery or an architect designing my dream home
This is my ‘countdown’ scroll. I’ll be working on this one perhaps until my works are due to be hung. It’s going to be fun. Read More
