thank you, ghada

ghada taking a photo of my painting, ‘eve takes a profile pic’

I want to thank Ghada Khalaf for two things: yesterday, she brought to my attention (via my ever-supportive sister-in-law J) this article* in the Arabic issue of Le Monde Diplomatique. Today, also via J, I received the above photo of Ghada photographing my painting at the Dasman Diabetes Institute. I love these little gestures. And although to whoever made them they may be a trifle, to me they mean the world.

*Another thank you goes out to Yahia Suwailim for the bit he wrote about me. I have known Mr. Suwailim for almost twenty years now, so I feel he knows me as an artist more than I can ever figure out for myself.

tapestry } grandmother, daughter and child

I am so incredibly behind schedule. There is so much to do outside the actual artwork itself, it’s not even funny. I’m anxious, worried, nauseous…and I’ve just used ellipses. I know it will work in the end, but at the expense of my mental and physical health over the next few weeks.

an apology

because i work everyday from early morning to late at night, in between everything else i have to do, i have fallen by the wayside with you. and for that, i apologize

This is an apology to you, my PGB. I feel I have neglected you in the past few weeks. It’s just that I’ve been quite busy with something I feel is a little repetitive, and I don’t want to tire you. And here’s the proof. Read More

peace one day } global truce 2012 art exhibition

‘ahava’ by fessal rajab

Three weeks ago, I hadn’t heard of Peace One Day. Last night, I found myself on a rare Friday night out, with my dear friend Reem, at the Peace One Day Global Truce Art Exhibition at the CAP warehouse. When normally I’d be tucked in bed at that time, I was in the midst of Kuwait’s artists, musicians and art enthusiasts, taking in all that the night had to offer. Alas I missed the face-painting and Punch & Judy, but the works were still there and the music was still playing. Organized for the first time in Kuwait by The Art Salon, the franchise aims to raise awareness of peace in the region, to all age groups. And what better way to do it than through an art show and mini-concert. Worth a Friday night out. Read More

homes } the office of mohammed al-fraih

mohammed al-fraih and the girl who is forever about to vanquish the chicks: ‘a moment right before the third holocaust’, 2010

This morning, I received  via WhatsApp this photo of Mr. Mohammed Al-Fraih in his office. It took me a few seconds to understand why I got this picture and then I saw my painting. I hold a very special connection with people who acquire my work, and today, Mr. Fraih has moved into a little room inside my mind and heart. Thank you :).

white on black

A few years ago I bought a black sketchbook. I liked the novelty of it but wasn’t sure how I would put it to good use. Yesterday, I finally found a proper purpose for my black sketchbook. On a routine visit to one of my favorite office supply stores, I made a little discovery: white carbon paper. Initially I thought I had purchased ditto sheets which would have been fantastic in itself but when I opened the box and felt the paper, I realized what it was. And these are my first two proper sketches in my black sketchbook. Read More
