stuck in cat’s hair
I have never met Thuraya Lynn. At least not in person. But through her works, I have fallen in love with this elfin artist. Thuraya Lynn is ‘Kuwaiti’ by name but she appears to be anything but. I follow her on Instagram and she seems to belong to a coterie of young, life-loving misfits (and I mean ‘misfits’ in a good way). But one thing sets her apart from her friends: her crazy talent and childlike imagination. Her drawings and paintings exhibit a fearlessness possessed only by seasoned painters. And possibly every child on this planet. In her drawings Thuraya leaves her miniature frame on her bedroom floor to become this giant, drawing like a master in the mind of an innocent child.
Thuraya, how do you start painting? Are you intimidated by a white sheet of paper? Most of the time I start with words. I have notes upon notes filled with titles and short haikus. In that sense the canvas turns into a visual poem. Listening to music, usually indie rock, Japanese pop or 60s jazz helps too. If I’m ever stuck, I go to the library and start flipping through historical books. I have a sick-admiration/fetish for China during the 1970s Cultural Revolution.
And no, [a blank sheet of paper] doesn’t scare me as much as it did when I was in my teens. I suppose it comes with havin’ more self-confidence in my own visions.

I have officially started work on my third PrettyGreenBullet exhibition. And a fixture in both previous PGB exhibitions were my postcards. I can’t imagine this one without. I’ve missed doing these. And normally when I miss a certain medium I always start off on a high. Today, I completed four postcards and started work on three others. It’ll be fun. Read More
when your notebook falls apart, you get a surprise like this

I love loose-leaf paper. My triplicate book accidentally ripped down the middle and I took advantage of that little hiccup by tearing the rest of it apart. The drawn-on pages anyway.
One of my favorite scenes from one of my favorite childhood movies, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, is when Eglantine Price, the apprentice witch, frantically shuffles through her disheveled heap of spells to find the right one. When I watched this movie as a twelve-year-old, I was very conflicted as to whether I would have preferred the spells the way they were, an utter but very tactilely satisfying mess, or in a file cabinet. I think what happened to my book answers that question once and for all. Definitely the former.

Letter to a Teacher
Posted on June 20, 2012 5 Comments
I’ve always expressed my appreciation for the teaching profession. Educators have a great responsibility for the creation of well-rounded, literate individuals. Many of my friends are teachers (in the literal sense; I’m leaving out parents here), and every single one of them instructs with a passion not just to teach but to learn from their students. To all my teacher friends and friendly teachers, I salute you.
