al-arabi exhibition ‘arab culture in the diaspora’

mom and her four daughters, 2012, will be one of four paintings i exhibit in monday's show

I am very pleased to announce that I will be exhibiting four of my paintings at the Al-Arabi Magazine’s upcoming exhibition Arab Culture in the Diaspora. It honors me to know that my works will be hanging among some of the region’s best: Ali Taleb, Fatima El Hajj, Ahmad Al-Hajari, Jaafar Islah, Sabeeha Bishara, Diaa Al Azzawi, Helmi Al Tuni, Afifa Al Aiby and Malika Akzanai.

The exhibition will take place at the Funoon Gallery in Thahiat Abdullah Al-Salem, opening Monday, March 12 at 7pm. The show will be up until Wednesday, March 14.

*Correction! Exhibition opens at 4:30! A very unusual time.

nabooly } two paintings of a cat

nabooly, 2012, acrylic on canvas, 80 x 100cm

I have been wanting to give my parents a house-warming gift for ages, so my mom asked me if I could create two paintings for a specific area in their new mountain home in Beirut. She had a few guidelines for me, one of which was ‘no people’, which is like asking McDonald’s not to serve burgers. She said that my dad had already purchased two figurative paintings from a local artist and wanted something different. So with challenge in hand, I thought of oranges, apples, furniture, eggs, and even Persian rugs. But I finally settled on Nabooly the family cat. He’s a gorgeous Scottish-Fold who sits around the house doing nothing all day (still life?). Plus, I felt I could sneak some people-like features into his face and expression. My parents haven’t seen the paintings yet so I’m deeply hoping they like them. Read More

in duplicate } the creation of unoriginal artwork #9 } mirror image #1

Yes, I’m in the sub-category zone now…

this is the original which is more a means to an end than an end itself. initially i didn’t want to include it in this post but then i thought, why not?

so this was inspired by inkblots which i love to create. if it isn't obvious to you, i just folded a piece of black carbon paper in half so that both pages would have the image transfered onto them. maybe not innovative, but fun for me nonetheless

press } men’s passion

my painting 'eve takes a profile pic' was included in an article about gallery tilal. it's one of several pieces throughout issues #036 and #037 featuring kuwait's leading art galleries. this is a page from issue #036

Since these works/photos were featured in back to back issues of men’s lifestyle magazine ‘Men’s Passion’, I decided to place both in one post. I love that the magazine is including more and more articles about the arts alongside its regular features on watches, speedboats, cars and fashion.

i haven’t been to sharon and shakir’s home so this gives me a good perspective on where the paintings are hung. their home gives my paintings a new life

I have been waiting so long for these and boy has the wait been worth it! I am so honored that my paintings hold such coveted spots in the sun-kissed home of Sharon and Shakir Abal. Thank you, Sharon and Shakir for sharing these wonderful photos with me and my friends. Read More

in duplicate } the creation of unoriginal artwork #4

i sketched this while a bbc radio 4 podcast was playing in the background. i kept picking up on a panel discussion of tennyson's poem 'in memoriam' and it sort of infiltrated itself into my drawing. i tried so hard with this one not to include any faces but that exercise proved futile. i can't not draw faces.

i think i like the duplicate more. i love the unintentional quality of the lines, transfered via an over-used piece of carbon paper. and something about this sketch in particular cements my desire to want to start permanent drawings on skin

folder found

front

I found this yesterday. I wasn’t looking for it but it was nice to see it again. It brings back memories of my days working at the National Bank of Kuwait’s now defunct Advertising Department. This folder was especially purchased for a training course I took some time in the early 90s. What I found inside are photos of my works from my first ever solo exhibition at the Boushahri Gallery, a title/price list and a list of the people who purchased my works. I have to say that for a complete unknown, I did pretty well!

The ladybug sticker must have been a later addition. It’s from a sheet of ladybug stickers I used to keep to encourage my very young children to brush their teeth.
