chairs

musical chairs, 2011, ink and markers on paper, 30 x 40cm

h's chair

I’ve always loved chairs, many of you know that. And one of the ideas I had for this show is to create some works inspired by chairs. I’ve done it before, years ago, and wanted to return to it. My only little problem was finding the right chairs for my liking. Thanks to my friend H who I think has just discovered how truly many chairs she owns, I don’t have to go out to the Friday market looking for these wonderful structures. She was generous enough to allow me to borrow the chairs (and actually have one yay!). This one is the first of my trilogy of chair-inspired drawings.

preparing canvases on friday

i try to convince myself that stretching these canvases is therapeutic. it's not.

I stretched the last four of my 50 x 50cm canvases for the Paintings About Sitting series this morning. I can’t believe I’m still working when my exhibition is just ten days away. I guess I’ll be working until the 4th of December until I have to work on actual set-up. Bah! Who am I kidding, it’s all very exciting and most of it rather enjoyable. Read More

the sitting series } six complete, four to go

this one looks completely different! actually, all the ones i posted originally do, except for one which I haven't included in this post

I am really gobbling these up. I am enjoying the process so much, because I find it both comforting and rewarding. If you remember, in a previous post I felt these were finished. Last night I decided that three of them weren’t. So I developed those three and left the last untouched. It just didn’t feel right to change it.

All works are 50cm x 50cm acrylic, dyed coffee filters/paper napkins on canvas. Some include gold leaf. I’m exhibiting all ten, including two larger paintings in my upcoming exhibition on December 5. Read More

borrowed from a dream

A few nights ago I dreamt that I looked at a friend’s fridge and saw a picture done in watercolor and ink. It was black and white on A3 watercolor paper. I even pictured in my mind the man who drew the picture. I loved the way he used the watercolor to make splotches of different consistency on the paper. Behind one of the paint puddles was a pair of eyes peeping through. It could have scared me but didn’t. When I woke up I felt I wanted to copy that picture. But it turned out quite differently because he and I have totally different styles. I wonder who this scruffy, bearded young man is and if he dreamed that night about one of my paintings.

hour drawing } twelve & a halfth hour

My hour drawing is finished. It’s more or less official: it takes 12-13 hours to complete these ink drawings on A3 paper. People always ask me and it’s so hard to keep track of time when I’m working. So now you have a reference point. Read More

hope house happy

aren't these books just gorgeous? the red one (not to be mistaken with the scarlet one still in its box) is my original*, gifted to me by my friend 'h'

I have finally come face-to-face with my recently-ordered notebooks from Hope House Press in England. These hand-made leather books smell like new shoes, but they’re better because you can write in them and draw in them and caress them and smell them. Thanks, Hope House, for crafting such wonderful books to hold my everyday thoughts and drawings.

*When I received my original leather notebook, my friend H couldn’t remember the name of the shop she bought it from, so I did some intensive image googling and found Hope House. I honestly thought that my original journal was a Hope House, but it isn’t. I just realized that when I got my new notebooks (which are just as gorgeous *if not a little more so sorry little red original notebook*) and H realized that Hope House Press was written inside. Just wanted to clarify! Read More

paintings about sitting: low chair, 2011, dyed coffee filters and acrylic on canvas, 50cm x 50cm

I started a new series titled Paintings About Sitting today. I really, really enjoyed doing these, from dying the coffee filters with food coloring to cutting and deco-patching the pieces onto the canvas and finally adding in my sitting ladies. Fun, fun, fun! Read More
