you & me } a bazaar (and perhaps bizarre) interview

I have to have something about my upcoming PrettyGreenBullet show in the December issue of Bazaar Magazine and I’ve been stumped. I’m tired of run-of-the-mill interviews, answering the same questions over and over again. And I can’t seem to find anyone out there who can really challenge me with a good one-on-one. I played with the thought of having some children bombard me with ruthless questions but it felt too contrived. Then I thought: wouldn’t it be cool if I were interviewed by you? The deadline for this interview is November 17th, leaving me with such little time. So for the next twenty-four hours I’d like you to send me your questions. As much as I encourage creativity-with a touch of the ridiculous-please keep your questions clean and tasteful! Ready, steady, go!

*ps. Your name will appear before your question, so please let me know if you want to remain anonymous.

pictorial stories from a palestinian cultural center exhibition set-up

my double-headed muse hind with a mirror and a headless mannequin

My set-up mate and muse Hind and I often begin to enjoy ourselves on the second day of setting up for the Palestinian Cultural Center exhibition. Frankly, the gorgeous merchandise lends itself beautifully to being photographed. And so does Hind.

The exhibition opens tomorrow, Monday, November 14th, 10 am at Bayt Lothan in Salmiya (by Marina Mall). Read More

money boxes for the upcoming palestinian culture center exhibition

decorating these money boxes have been fun, although a little difficult to handle as they are tin and difficult to clean!

At the Palestinian Culture Center we like to encourage the spirit of giving. For a few years now, we’ve been selling these money banks to motivate children and adults alike to collect their change rather than discard it. On the last day of our four-day exhibitions, the money is counted and donated to various Palestinian causes. This year I volunteered to decorate these banks. We used to use small, ceramic urns with a slot, but unfortunately the market was out of those. I don’t think I did too bad with the tin boxes though, as big of a pain as they were!

new spiral sketchbook } six sketches

I just bought a new sketchbook because I miss my spiral sketchbook. Visually I loved the way it looked scanned and online. The only thing that really irks me with these new sketchbooks is the perforations. I don’t want my pages perforated! And it’s always something I forget to check for.  Read More

postcards on friday

my handy watercolor set, two postcards and bubble wrap

I haven’t worked on these postcards for a while. One of my main inspirations to return to these watercolor collages was this post by Carly Swenson, whose blog NakedCarlyArt I really enjoy. Check out the bubble wrap in her work; made me rush for my roll of bubble wrap and start playing again! Read More

crash

it used to be a car. now it's a story

Yesterday, I took these photos of a terrible car wreck. I debated with myself whether these are considered ‘art’ or not. I did post them on Facebook. But am I being lewd and exploitative by posting them here (or there, for that matter!)? I may be sick, but I find great beauty in this wreckage. It’s not cool that it happened, and it’s not cool that most likely the person who was driving this is dead. But if I remove that from the final result- the wreck and these photos-is it possible to filter out the tragedy and be left with a painful reminder in the form of an onsite installation? People were actually driving to what’s left of this Lincoln Town Car to take photos. Many of these people were with their uniformed kids (this is where I park to pick up my children after school) who had brought along cameras (the crash is three days old today). I saw at least three dads come through with their children, commenting on the wreckage, shaking their heads and tut-tutting. Would they have gone to an art gallery to see this specimen of modern day ruins? Or is it up to the artist to dub this a work of art, take it to its next evolutionary stage? I don’t know. I just feel strongly that I have to hope I’m forgiven by whoever it was in this car for posting these photos. Read More
