Sometimes I Think I’m a Photographer|Fatima El Hajj Exhibition at the FA Gallery

this is the first painting that caught my eye in the gallery, 'moroccan door'. maybe it was because i was giving fatima a big hug when i spotted it, or maybe because it just tugged at my heart. it was the first of many favorites. photos don't make fatima's work justice because it is so, so visually tactile and delicious

I had a very busy morning yesterday. It was one of those mornings you feel were worth getting out of bed and driving around town for. Good company, a big jar of assorted eye candy and a healthy dose of cultural adrenaline. After the car show, I drove to the FA Gallery to see Lebanese artist Fatima El Hajj’s exhibition, Gardens of the Spirit. I wasn’t sure she would be there, and if she were, I wasn’t sure she’d recognize me. I met her in Beirut eons ago (and in what seems like another lifetime). We had met over coffee and I remember her taking me to one of her favorite bookshops and buying me two gorgeous Mohamed Naciri books. The books inspired me and her gesture really touched my heart. Other than her colorful paintings, that is what I remember about Fatima El Hajj. As I said above, Fatima’s works are very tactile. I do wish I took closer photos of her work, but I was too busy taking the paintings in.

As a bonus, the crew of Adam & Eve magazine was there for a photo shoot. And I get so excited at photo shoots! I’m so glad they were using both the gallery (which I am more and more warming up to) and Fatima’s work as a backdrop. Good choice. Read More

Sometimes I Think I’m a Photographer|Kuwait’s Historical, Vintage & Classic Cars Museum, Shuwaikh

i love vintage anything, so this morning i was a bit like imelda marcos in a louboutin outlet store. what a treasure trove in the midst of shuwaikh industrial area!

I bet you didn’t know we had a museum of cars in this country. Well, we do. And I was there this morning. If anything lends itself to being photographed, it’s these majestic automobiles. I could describe the experience but nothing beats being there and feeling the sheer magnitude of the sizes, color and stylings of these glorious machines. The museum even houses an original Astin Martin DB5 from the 1964 James Bond movie Goldfinger.

The address is: Shuwaikh Industrial Area, Block 8, Street 49. You can see the building and sign to your right if you’re driving on the 80 heading towards the City (before the 55 intersection). Read More

New Painting|Six Eves Play Hide-and-Go-Seek

I started this painting yesterday morning. I decided to make it a landscape format rather than portrait because the canvas is too tall for my easel. That was the easy step. I then thought: hmm, why don’t I actually paint a landscape. The only time I’d ever painted a landscape from life was in Madrid, eons ago. And I must say that the only landscape surrounding me at the moment is my living room/studio, and the buildings outside. So I figured I’d just have to go with my memory and some imagination. Then this morning, by sheer coincidence and luck, an FB friend of mine, Tim Pieraccini, sent me a video he’d filmed, an interview with Sussex artist Katie Sollohub. The interview was conducted by Robert Cohen.

I had a bit of a eureka moment when I saw one of her landscapes, which was so whimsical, carefree and uninhibited by physics and fact. Immediately I wanted to rush to my own painting (I eventually got to it after sorting my place, picking up a friend, going out for a hearty breakfast, a trip to The Sultan Center, and an episode of The Weakest Link; hey, it is Friday!). Inhibition is a bit of a pesky fly you have to shake off constantly. And this time, it took Katie Sollohub’s painting to help swat it away. Read More

Gallery Tilal|Stories of Eves|The Fitting*

the fitting amended

This painting is a little jarring on the eyes, but sometimes I feel I have to step out of my comfort zone a little. I felt that the lines emanating from behind her, although at first a playful way to cover my canvas, became very necessary as they complemented her unsettling gaze. To quote just a couple of my children’s remarks: ‘She’s scary.’ ‘She’s mocking me.’ Perfect!

*I changed it. I might change it some more. It’s like that sometimes.

Gallery Tilal|Stories of Eves|Eve Plays Tek Too*

eve plays tek too, 2011, acrylic and collage on canvas, 100cm x 100cm

*Tek Too is the Kuwaiti pronunciation of ‘take two’. I would never dream of pronouncing it otherwise. It’s a card game my family is very keen on playing. Everyone plays, all ages and as many people as willing to play. It can be quite competitive and has on one or two occasions nearly caused the downfall of the Kandari clan. Read More

Struggle in the Studio|Ghadah Vs. Eve

this painting is THIS close to completion

Two of the three paintings I’m currently working on are giving me hell. If I could, I’d punch them both and get it over with. I’m struggling to get them out of the rut they’re in. But I know we’ll all pull through. Trust and patience.  Read More

Perfect Skin

When it came to bags, Mark spoiled Elisabeth rotten. And when her hunger for new purses could no longer be satiated, she fell into a depression. That night Mark offered to create the most luxurious hand-bag for her. This proposal was enough to lift her from her funk for as long as it took him to achieve such a task.  Read More
