found notebook from the nineteen hundreds

I recently found this sketchpad under a pile of books. It had always been there-I see it all the time-but I never thought to look in it. What I found was a barely filled book of drawings, but more outstandingly, ideas; from being the King of my own little island (not a Queen, and don’t ask me why) to the embryonic stage of a plan to  direct an Oscar Wilde play. It’s an older sketchbook, dating from the late 1990s. I know that because my son was a baby in the sketch of him sleeping. The book is large and a bit awkward. I don’t know if I’ll ever use it again for anything, it’s too big. Read More

three paintings|december 12 am

i love a good cat fight, especially in long flowing dresses

I often work on several canvases at a time. This is for several reasons, only two of which I remember at the top of my head: first of all, economic reasons. One of my least favorite things about the acrylic medium (which is also one of my favorite things about it) is its rapid dryness factor. When I have more than one canvas at  my disposal, I like to use whatever paint left over from one painting onto another. It saves time and paint and is all ’round more efficient. The second reason I like working on more than one painting is that I need to take a mental and physical break from one and start or resume work on another. I think I have a relatively short attention span (or a huge penchant for multi-tasking, I don’t know…). And this is why. Read More

I’ve been working all morning on three paintings so forgive me if I diverge a little. As you may already know, I’ve been working a lot with collage; and collage means glue. Glue sticks to everything and is amazing to peel off. So I peeled my dried up chunk of glue off the yogurt tub I was using and tacked it to a picture of one of my paintings, on my cork board. And with a stroke of serendipity, I got this result which I am very happy with. Mind you, the fact that I’m so happy with this could possibly be another side-effect of glue.

I started a new painting today. I’ve done hundreds of paintings and I’m always a little stuck at first. It seems that I have a different approach to every empty canvas. I have to keep reminding myself to just relax and enjoy it.

scale

Many times when people see my works in real life they comment on the size, whether they expected the painting/drawing to be smaller or larger. So I thought: why not put things in perspective for everyone?

*Please ignore the bad hair (and just about everything else that’s not relevant). Thank you.

waiting for the stationary shop to open

i drew these on some food coupons i got at the palestinian cultural exhibition shawarma stand

I spend so much of my time waiting: at traffic lights, clinic waiting rooms, for my children after school, at my parents’ as the children suffer with the tutor. Usually I have a notebook or sketchbook in my bag somewhere, or a book to read, so I’m always taken care of. I got to Mogahwi early this morning with twelve minutes to opening time. I panicked for a second (literally) because I didn’t have any of my books with me. I knew that I’d have paper though, maybe a receipt, invoice, something. So I found these. And lucky for me, I had one of my Isograph pens with me.
