Another lovely surprise in my mailbox, this time from Laila Al-Hamad, who says, ‘The girls are keeping me company in my office, such a treat!’ I’m sure they love spending their time with you too, Laila. Thanks for the photo!

I started this three days ago. Until this morning I had an uncomfortable relationship with this painting. I wasn’t happy, it wasn’t giving me the buzz I usually get when I’m this far into a painting. So I watched a section of a Dali video and thought: screw this, I don’t like the painting, I’m […]

Sometimes I take an old practice painting from when I was giving lessons and put it in some kind of context.

My kiddies are back in school and I’m free! Free, I tell you, free! So I had a lovely morning of relaxation, just me and my paints. Bliss. I wouldn’t have stopped painting but I must be leaving soon to pick up my little ones. I can’t wait to get back to this painting as […]

This is my painting, Thirty-Five Pages Front and Back from the Stories of Eves collection. It dwells in the home of my once-student/budding artist Rana Al-Bahar (who also does beautiful jewelry). In her e-mail she said, “Finally found the perfect spot in my living room. I see it every morning and night.” It’s so awesome […]

I started this painting a while ago but just got back to it today. I still have some decisions to make about it. As always, please no comments until it’s done. Sometimes people give me suggestions and although I appreciate that, I like to work on my paintings without other people’s voices in my head!
Ballerina Pink at Gallery Tilal

I visited Gallery Tilal this morning to check on my painting Ballerina Pink, which is there for a prospective buyer. I must say, this is one of my most camouflage-ic paintings. It blends in anywhere it’s placed. At least I think it does.

I started this painting on July 29th, worked on it a little last Sunday and happily finished with it this afternoon. If you’d like to see some of the previous layers of this painting, click here.

Of course this is still a work in progress. I have an idea of what I want to do next but I must be patient and wait for it to dry completely.

This is a commissioned work I started two days ago and finished this morning. Weeks ago, the request was simple: to paint a picture influenced by Sadu weaving. As simple as my goal was, I found myself floundering under the weight of the original painting I started for the job. It just wasn’t working out for […]
new painting|escaping ballerinas|july 1 & july 2
Posted on July 2, 2011 5 Comments
I started this painting yesterday. I didn’t think I’d get this far, but I got really into it. I’m very much enjoying the patterning, and I made it a rule to avoid all opaqueness, which is very different from my usual approach to painting. I only broke the rule at the end because it was […]

I finally completed my latest confection. Why am I suddenly in the mood for cotton candy?

Although I love receiving comments on PrettyGreenBullet, I publish these ‘painting-in-progress’ posts simply to share. It’s hard for me to work on a painting with other people’s voices in my head. I do know and appreciate that different people prefer these paintings at different stages. As for me, I not only enjoy the process, but […]
Reza Doust|Get Tested|The Sultan Gallery
Posted on June 1, 2011 5 Comments
Last Thursday, in the nick of time, I managed to make it to Reza Doust‘s exhibition at the Sultan Gallery. According to his tally, I was the fourth Kuwaiti artist to visit that afternoon. Not bad for someone who has never been in the top ten of anything before. Back to the point, I had […]

Over lunch, my brother Mohammed asked me if I knew who, from Inspire Advertising, bought one of my paintings from 2004’s Cultural Re-Expressions 101 exhibition. I told him that my memory doesn’t extend that far back. So he showed me this picture he took of one of my paintings outside the company’s offices, in the […]
Eve Shreds the Note|From Nothing to an Angry Bride
Posted on April 4, 2011 1 Comment
This is a video I made with my son, Khaled, from footage I had taken of myself painting Eve Shreds the Note. Actually, he did most of the work; I just sat there trying to be helpful but ended up hindering his efforts to get on with it. Music by (in order): Elbow/The Birds, Aimee […]
New Painting|An Aging Ballerina with Many, Many Flowers
Posted on March 29, 2011 2 Comments
When I decided to do a dance series, I started off so gung-ho and art school about it. I wanted to call Andie Hicks (I think everyone with a daughter, niece or little sister knows she’s the doyen of Kuwait’s ballet world) and sit in on her sessions. Then I thought I’d get the same […]
